PEOPLE IN MOTION / NUMBERS WITH CONTEXT

Movement is a flow.
Belonging is a life.

Immigration, emigration and net migration answer different questions.

Read the three numbers.

Immigration measures arrivals within a stated statistical definition and period. Emigration measures departures. Net migration is the difference. A lower net figure can result from fewer arrivals, more departures or both. It does not, on its own, describe the experiences of the people involved.

Long-term migration estimates, visa grants, asylum applications and a population stock are not interchangeable. Check the geography, period, definition and revision status before comparing a chart or headline. The UK and Ireland have separate statistical series.

A dated comparison, not a shared total.

For the UK, the ONS release for the year ending December 2025 estimates 813,000 arrivals and 642,000 departures: net 171,000. Ireland’s CSO release for the year to April 2026 estimates 110,600 arrivals and 62,500 departures: net 48,100.

These estimates cover different jurisdictions and periods. Recent figures are provisional or preliminary and may change. Compare definitions before comparing outcomes.

What should the public conversation ask?

Which skills are needed? Where are homes and services under pressure? Who can access training? Why do people leave, return or stay? What are employers, institutions and governments doing in response? Effects vary by place, sector and time; one national total cannot explain every local outcome.

People are not a substitute for a policy argument.

It is reasonable to debate migration rules, service capacity, wages and integration. It is not sound analysis to assign a country's difficulties to a nationality or ethnic group. Examine the mechanism, the evidence and the choices available. Include the contributions and constraints experienced by both newcomers and established communities.

A more useful next question.

Instead of asking whether a single number is “good” or “bad”, ask what the evidence says about a defined outcome. Then consider a response that can be evaluated: better skills recognition, stronger local capacity, clearer information or improved access to opportunity.

Migration estimates are revised as methods and evidence improve. Source cards identify the release being used; this site does not present an automatically updated live counter.
